It’s always disturbs me that stories concerning female teachers having sex with male students are always written with a hint of whimsicalness, or lightness. When a male teacher is accused he is written about as if he is Hannibal Lecter. Whether people believe the two scenarios are different (female teacher/male student vs. male teacher/female student), in he eyes of the law they are not (or are not supposed to be).
Pay attention to the tone of the story below
A disgraced Horndog High teacher was done in by a sexy mermaid tattoo.
Investigators believed a James Madison High School student’s allegations about an affair with his teacher in part because he “described tattoos etched on intimate parts” of her body.
And a source and photo confirm that one of the tattoos was a giant, curvaceous mermaid stretched across English teacher Erin Sayar’s upper thigh.
The photograph shows Sayar lying in a bed wearing thigh-high stockings, a garter belt and red lipstick. Her chest pours partially out of a skimpy black-and-white top, and the mermaid’s bluish-green tail wraps from her knee to her hip.
Tattoo artist Vincent Castiglia of Omega Tattoos in Manhattan, said mermaid tattoos are usually associated with sirens.
“The temptress,” he said. “The sirens, as soon as they opened their mouths, you couldn’t get away from them.”
The professional photo was apparently taken after Sayar won a contest in 2010, her posts on a Long Island social networking site show.
“I’m so excited! I won a photo shoot!” Sayar, calling herself Candy Girl, wrote on the site LIFamilies.com. “I think I am going to use it for a boudoir session.”
The English teacher was arraigned Friday for statutory rape and a long list of other charges for allegedly having sex with 16-year-old student Kevin Eng at least eight times.
Sayar’s husband, Jimmy Lathrop, on Saturday denied reports that the couple was getting a divorce. “It’s not true. It’s bull—t,” Lathrop said.
In another post on the Long Island networking site in June 2009, Sayar answered a question about how she would rate her looks.
“I think I am extremely attractive. I know that other people feel that way about me as I have heard it all my life,” she wrote. “I have been called everything from ‘very pretty’ to ‘hot’ to ‘beautiful’ to ‘stunning.’ I used to have a slammin’ body.”

The fact that your description and the article uses the words “had sex with” and “had an affair with”, rather than raped, is evidence that society views the sexual assault and rape of boys and men by women to be a light-hearted joke. In reality, rape and statutory rape traumatizes and destroys the lives of most male victims.
LAC,
Your words couldn’t have hit me any more squarely than they did. You are profoundly correct. I must apologize to you, to me (having been a victim myself), to everyone who has endured the trauma of rape, and the family and friends of those who have endured the trauma of rape.
I try to be conscious of the words I use in my posts, making sure everyone knows rape is rape, no matter which gender is the victim and which is the perpetrator. In writing what I did at the beginning of the post, I was trying not to call her a rapist until she is proven to be so, which is the same standard I fight for when it comes to men accused of rape. But yes, I should have said she is accused of rape, because that is what it is when a teacher has sex with an underage student. So, while she is not a convicted rapist, she is definitely an accused rapist and I should have addressed her accordingly.
The point I was trying to make with the post is the soft-sell language, and the cutesy crap within the article which I found disturbing. 3/4 of the article was about photo sessions, and her being ‘pretty’ and ‘hot,’ and the mythology of mermaids and sirens.
Thanks for keeping me on my toes. Diligence is what we need.
